Woven in the ancient town of Paithan on the banks of the Godavari, the Paithani is Maharashtra's most treasured silk saree and one of India's finest.
What sets a Paithani apart is its tapestry weave technique: the pallu and border motifs are woven in by hand using individual bobbins of zari and silk, one row at a time. No printing, no embroidery every peacock, lotus, and vine is built directly into the fabric. The result is a pallu that looks identical on both sides.
The signature elements are the peacock (mor) motif in the pallu, the oblique square (bangdi mor) border, and the richly contrasting body-to-border colour play that Paithani weavers are celebrated for.
GI-tagged and sourced from certified looms in Yeola and Paithan. A saree that is as much artwork as it is heirloom.
